Coordination Meeting: Mrauk-U To Put As World Heritage List Discussed

The coordination meeting for putting Mrauk-U Cultural Heritage Zone in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites was held at the Archeological Research and National Museums Department, Yangon Branch, on Thursday.

At the meeting, the Union Minister for Religious Affairs and Culture U Ko Ko said that totaling 48 heritage sites have been preserving setting the zonals in line with the law to protect the cultural heritages in the country. Mrauk-U Cultural Heritage Zone is one of national level heritage sites. The proposals for totaling 17 heritages sites in the country including 10 cultural heritage sites and 7 natural heritage sites have bee submitted to UNESCO World Heritage Center to recognize as the World Heritage Sites. Pyu ancient cities of Halin, Beikthano and Sri Ksetra on 22nd June, 2014 and Bagan Cultural Heritage Zone on 6th July, 2019 were added to the World Heritage list.

Moreover, Mahalawkamarazein  (a) Kuthodaw  pagoda in Mandalay on 6th June, 2013, Razakumar  quadrilingual  stone inscription on 4th October, 2015, King Bayintnaung’s trilingual Bell inscription in Shwesigon pagoda in Bagan on 24th October, 2017, King Alaungmintaya’s royal letter on gold plaque in Hanover of Germany were recorded as the Memory of the World and the Arnandasandra stone inscription in Shit-Thaung  pagoda in Mrauk-U was recorded as Memory of Asia-Pacific on 16th June, 2018. The union minister added that the ministry of religious affairs and culture put efforts for Mrauk-U Region to put in the World Heritage list since 2015-2016, the necessary preparations have been making  and Nomination Dossier (Draft) was submitted to World Heritage Committee during September, 2019.

And then, union minister urged the cooperatio of the local residents in the process for the cultural heritage site. Next, the director general and deputy director general of the department of archeological research and national museums and clarified the preparation works for the Mrauk-U cultural heritage zone to put in the list of World Heritage sites.

Then, deputy minister U Tun Ohn and permanent secretary U Myint Oo and attendees took part in the discussions and supplemented necessaries. In his speech of clusion, Union Minister U Ko Ko pointed out the need of peace and stability in the region to carry out the tasks for the efforts to put the Mrauk-U Cultural Heritage zone as a World Heritage site and requirement of cooperation by the monks and all walks of life in the Rakhine State and requrested their coordination, it’s learnt.
