Ecuador's southern border with Peru remains closed

The Ecuadorian government is closing its shared land border with Peru. The border closing is part of prevention and control measures in response to the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic and its new variant. although Peru's government announcing the reopening of its land borders, the border closing decision came on Tuesday.

Police forces were deployed early in the morning to secure the border and prevent any type of disturbances in the area. Border residents were upset because they were expecting the border to reopen on Wednesday. Border traders indicated that they will continue to cross the border illegally. According to the Peruvian National Police, about 32-thousand Venezuelans have been intercepted for trying to cross the border.
