More than 90 endangered baby loggerhead turtles have been released back into the wild on the New South Wales Central Coast and around 20 more are expected to be released in the coming days after the nest was excavated over a week ago.

One hundred and thirty eggs were excavated from Shelly Beach, just north of Sydney, in late March, after temperatures in the sand dropped below the survival threshold. They were transported to Taronga zoo in incubators for monitoring and dozens have successfully hatched since the excavation. The nest was the southernmost on record for the endangered species.
