Inspection of grain ships headed to and from Ukraine continued over the weekend as footage released by the Turkish Defense Ministry on Sunday showed an extensive check of the grain carrier Navi Star on Saturday.
The Panama-flagged Navi Star, which is carrying 33,000 tons of grain to Ireland, left Ukraine’s Odesa port on Friday. The Turkish Defense Ministry tweeted that it would be inspected by the Joint Coordination Center, the body set up under an agreement to export some 20 million tons of grain from Ukrainian silos. The coordination center is run by officials from Ukraine, Russia, Turkey, and the United Nations. The checks seek to ensure that outbound cargo ships carry only grain, fertilizer, or food and not any other commodities and that inbound ships are not carrying weapons. The first grain shipment passed through Istanbul on Monday, bound for Lebanon.
