Japan PM hails 'great victory' in World Cup match

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida on Thursday labelled his country's upset 2-1 win over Germany at the World Cup in Qatar a "great victory.

"Kishida said he thought it was "a great game that showed team power, individual power, and the direction of the coach."Kishida also wished the team well ahead of its match against Costa Rica on Sunday. Meanwhile, Japanese fans celebrated across the country after their national team's upset World Cup 2-1 victory against Germany.

Crowds were seen celebrating on the street in major cities including Tokyo and Osaka.It was only the third time Germany had lost its tournament-opening game after defeats against Algeria in 1982 and Mexico in 2018.In the other World Cup openers for Germany, the team had won 13 matches and drawn four.
