Lava rivers in Guatemalan Pacaya volcano

Guatemalan disaster relief authorities remain on alert due to a renewed activity that the Pacaya Volcano showed on Thursday. According to the National Institute of Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology (INSIVUMEH), the volcano registered a change of activity from explosive to effusive on April 29, causing a new fissure on its northwest flank.

The activity in the new fissure feeds a lava flow that descends towards the southwest of the foothills up to 2300 meters in length. Disaster relief authorities said no communities are currently at risk of being affected by the new lava flow, but the direction the flow may take is uncertain, so it is being kept under constant observation.
