Myanmar’s black gram and pigeon peas are experiencing a surge in demand from India this year, accompanied by high yields.
The country boasts a diverse range of beans and pulses, with only 10% consumed locally, while the remaining 90% are exported to foreign markets. India and China stand out as major buyers of Myanmar’s agricultural produce.
Chairman, Bayintnaung Wholesale Center, Dr. Myo Lwin said "Black grams and pigeon peas are mainly exported to India, while green grams are destined for China and the Southeast Asian region. India purchases the majority of the remaining beans and pulses. Additionally, there are exports to North America and Europe, particularly for green grams used in bean sprout production."
Currently, India has growing demand and consumption requirements for black grams and pigeon peas.
Soe Win Myint, Soe Win Myint Broker’s Center, Mandalay, Owner said "Once the bean market commences after Thingyan, the demand is exceptionally high, particularly for black grams, pigeon peas, and green grams. We experience significant demand from India. Bean exports contribute greatly to the country’s income, offering significant opportunities for both farmers and the nation as a whole."
Monthly bean exports fetch a sum of 100 to 150 million US dollars, reinforcing the importance of this agricultural sector in Myanmar's economic landscape.
