As the holiday season ramps up, Sotheby's auction house in New York is getting ready to auction off some of its highest value luxury items, ranging from multi-million dollar pieces of jewelry to historical artifacts and even a one-of-a-kind dinosaur skull fossil.

The crown jewel of its current collection is known as the Golden Canary diamond. At an estimated value of $15 to $20 million, the 303 carat diamond has humble beginnings .Quig Bruning, Senior Vice President and Head of Jewelry at Sotheby's said "So I'm standing in front of the Golden Canary diamond.

It's the largest flawless or internally flawless diamond ever graded by the GIA. It's 303 carats, deep, brownish yellow. And it's the star lot of our December 7th magnificent jewel sale.". Sotheby’s says the diamond was found in the 1980's by a young girl who was playing in a pile of rubble in the backyard of her uncle's house in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

It is believed that miners in the area had discarded the rock, believing it was too big to contain a diamond. The Golden Canary diamond will be auctioned off among other high-value jewels at Sotheby's on December 7th.
