U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman held talks with Australia's Foreign Minister Penny Wong in Canberra. Sherman's visit to Australia comes after she attended World War II commemorations to mark the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Guadalcanal in Honiara hosted by the Solomon Islands government.

She said the U.S. is working to expand its diplomatic presence in the Pacific. Commemorations are being held over three days in the Solomon Islands to mark the anniversary of the Guadalcanal campaign. Sherman has also visited the Pacific nations of Samoa and Tonga and plans to visit New Zealand.
